Sherman Alexie's novel has been embraced by many young adult readers. This autobiographical account of a young Native American living on a Spokane reservation has resonated with teens everywhere who often feel misunderstood and alone. Junior, the main character, manages to transfer to a predominately white school, but his fellow Native Americans are not supportive of his decision.Junior himself struggles to find his place in a sea of new peers. This move alienates him from his best friend and puts them at odds with each other when both become star players on opposing basketball teams. Meanwhile junior's family experiences tragic losses associated with life on a reservation: alcoholism and violence. Throughout the book, Junior does not lose his sense of humor (which is at times immature and inappropriate). This is a must read for youth everywhere.
